Doe has been an important character and a mentor to many for a long time in the Pasir Ris Skateboarding scene. Earning alot of respect from his peers, he's one of Pasir Ris' top. Here's an inside scoop behind the "shadow of 32" himself.
Halil: Hey doe, many of the guys call u "master" for a reason. why is that?It sounds so not u.haha.
Doe: I feel weird about it myself. Ahmad calls me master.Amin calls me an "ancient".And you call me master too. I did have "projects" before. Guys like Ikrimah, Amintaker,Ajah,Zahid,Choon Wei and Yan and now currently Helmy.
Halil: Project huh?You sound like some professor or something. Heard those guys were under you or some sort?
Doe: Yup, they were my understudies. They learnt the basics from me.Some were hooked to skateboarding thanks to me.wakaka.Amintaker was a successful project.He's probably the best now.And helmy getting better every session.
Halil: And you're proud of it?
Doe: Of course!I spent my whole teenage life dedicating to skateboarding. And I still encourage people to skate rather than take drugs and stuff.To me, it's a great achievement.
Halil: alright. So what's a skateboard to u?
Doe: it's probably my first love. Something I will always cherish, despite my injuries and stuff. I can be happy on a board anytime. When you step on a board, you're like in your own world. You enjoy the tricks that you do, the falling down, but most importantly, the "yeah" i get from people when i land a trick, be it simple or hard. it's not the difficulty that's important.To me, it's the flow that counts.
Halil: Well, I saw you land that phat KF at Sunplaza after a long break from stairs. You've overcomed your fear from injuries due to that broken arm.
Doe: Yeah, but I'm still concern about getting hurt again. But what to do, falling and injuries are a part of skateboarding itself.
Halil: Yup, that's right. So, who is your favourite Private Sessions skater?
Doe: Hmm, that's a hard one. I have no particular favourite. There are a few though. I like Amintaker's style. He got this ferocity in him, especially when it comes to stairs. Love his rock n roll attitude. Din has smooth style, and cocky personality, which is a suprisingly nice combo. He makes switch-stance so gnarly. Martin got this anyhow-just-do attitude. His crazy attitude makes every skate session fun and loud and not dull at all. Fattah. He's a legend. And probably has the best smooth style than any of us. of course, 10 years of skating makes alotta difference.
Halil:Haha.Hmm, if there so many good skaters around us, what makes you so special than the rest?
Doe: I don't know,man. Don't ask me.Don't ask them. It's just the way it is. 99% of our skate sessions, they will call me up to skate. It's like a must.haha, and like, it's weird.But it's a routine that has been going on for years.
Halil: ok. So how long more before you retire from this love?
Doe: Not anytime soon, my friend. I love skateboarding. It's in my blood. It's in me. I wasn't forced to skate. I just had to do it. And till now, I'm still in love with it. I don't get bored of it. I don't get sick of it. You know what I mean. Not anytime soon.
Halil: Wow.And what do you wish to see or do in future?
Doe: I would love to see the future of Private Sessions flourish. I miss the old times. The peeps who were with us but retired. I hope that the rest of us will still continue skating till we can't even walk. And I hope to see the new younger generation to replace us in future. Guys like Ajai,for example. To me, being 21 is just the beginning. I will be doing bigger stuff soon. *grins*
