On the weekends Chino State Prison offers a discount entertainment package. Twenty five dollar admission for a family of four plus, a meal and a show. Children under six get in free.
It’s quite exciting watching all those prisoners dressed up in animal costumes pretending to be lions, and elephants and cougars. My sons’s favorite is the giraffe, because it takes two prisoners, one sitting on another’s shoulders, to make. Sometimes the bottom prisoner will lose his balance, sending the top prisoner tumbling forward to the ground. This of course causes all the children howl with delight, and usually results in the prisoners fighting each other, which the children love even more.
Eventually the prison guards will come in and shoot the prisoners in the neck with tranquilizer darts to sedate them.
On special occasions, like birthday parties, and Easter picnics they will let children shoot the prisoners with tranquilizer darts. It’s all supervised.
